COBALT.
5 - male - canine - borzoi - lexis - citizen
Personality: The first thing one might notice when meeting Cobalt for the first time is that he is completely and utterly crazy. I mean, seriously off the rocker. His mind is something of a labyrinth, penetrable only to him and so completely strange that not even the best of perception can know what he is thinking. Most of what he says, at first glance, is complete gibberish. His sentences make sense, but his meaning is always a mystery. His speech is something of a code to be broken, and only being around him often can anyone manage to see a little light in his obscure way of communication.
Most of the time, this dog can be seen immensely happy. He seems to be on a constant high, going about life with an air of joy. But, there are also other moments where his mood changes in a fraction of a second, without any apparent trigger. His good mood may suddenly dip into intense anger, with snarling and snapping jaws, without the other having done anything to provoke it. This often puts the person in question off, because of the sudden aggressiveness. This may also happen with other emotions, such as near-depressive sadness, grumpyness and also fear. The unpredictability of these mood swings generally earns him a very unapproachable reputation, which is already bad enough with him being completely bonkers.
If one goes past these traits and into this boy's convoluted mind, you will find an incredible intelligence. Not just intelligence, but genius. He could have been the next canine Einstein if he wasn't so crazy. His mind is constantly whirring with wonder and theories to things most don't even know exist and his understanding of science and stuff of the universe is completely staggering. He understands atoms and molecules and black holes and just about everything in between, knowledge passed down from his father, who had once lived with a scientist. There is an incredible amount of information stored in that incredible brain of his, and there is still space for more. He thirsts for knowledge like one thirsts for water in the desert, always seeking it in his daily life. Cobalt also has photographic memory, an amazing ability to remember things that have happened long ago and minute details of a scene.
While his own emotions and his capacity to deal with them are a complete mystery, Cobalt is usually excellent at seeing through the intentions of others, something that many find very unsettling. Whilst he can guess their good or bad deeds in the making, he is rather incapable of figuring out exactly what emotions the other is feeling, which casts a shadow of secrecy on the way he manages to pick on the intentions of another creature. To him though, it is just a feeling, a hunch that maybe this person is wishing him ill or good. Sentiments are, to him, a great mystery, something that despite his great mind, he cannot comprehend. He is incapable of seeing emotions in others except for intense fear, rage (when not contained) and surprise, which inhibits communication with others.
This canine is very unpredictable. Sometimes, he will shy away from contact with any other creature, preferring to be alone and develop one of his theories and experiment some things, especially when he has something on his mind. The thing with his crazed brain, is that he can't just change what's in his head. He has to go to the end of it before being able to concentrate on anything else. This is why he can be days without any contact with anyone, locked in his own little world, thinking about one single thing, and then, when he has gotten to the end of what he was thinking about, go towards others and try to communicate. Then, and only then, can he actually have any contact with any other creature but himself.
Appearance: In one word, Cobalt can be described as simply average. He is average height, average weight, average physical abilities and just about everything about his exterior is breed average. Just like every borzoi, he streamline and elegant, built for speed and endurance. His deep chest curves into a small waist, and his strong, long legs allow him massive strides. His head is set high on a long neck, small and refined. His eyes are large and expressive, russet-brown in colour. They always have that glint of wonder in them. His ears, small and almost always pressed to his skull, are floppy and soft. As for his tail, it is very long, stretching right to the ground. As for his fur, his entire body is covered with a slightly wavy soft fur, silky to the touch and quite long. As any borzoi, he has abundant feathering on his limbs, tail and neck. His coat is weather resistant and adapted to both warm and cold conditions by a cycle of shedding and growing more fur. As for colour, his fur is of a pure white all over his body, without the slightest trace of any other colour anywhere.
History: Cobalt was born to two ex-housepets, two borzoi. Both of them had lived with a much loved owner, a scientist and physicist, who was very fond of his two dogs. In fact, they were the only things he cared about, apart from his research. This man would talk to them, confide in them, ignorant of the fact that they had grown to understand his words. In this way, the two canines had come to learn a lot about the way the universe worked.
Unfortunately, this beloved owner wasn't spared by the virus, which killed him in a matter of hours. The two borzoi were left with nothing except a grieving heart. They soon had to learn to fend for themselves, and they did.
A year later, Cobalt was born. A complicated delivery sucked all strength out of his mother, who died soon after. His father was left with his son, only a few hours old, without any way of feeding him. The male reluctantly left the pup in search of a female who could feed the youngster, returning a few hours later with a caretaker. The brown terrier, who had two pups of her own, had grudgingly accepted to care for the young Cobalt.
Despite the stressed relationship between the terrier and the father, the young pup grew quickly. It became apparent that he wasn't normal. He was different. He wasn't interested in playing much with the other pups, preferring to be by himself and watch the life around him. He kept the puphood innocence and naivety and the constant joy, but wouldn't utter a word. He just wouldn't talk. Instead of playing tag and play wrestling with his adoptive siblings, Cobalt would sit with his father, listening to his tales from when he was still a pet, learning in silence.
It soon became clear that something was very wrong in the mind of the young pup. His eyes held a glint of wonder at every little thing, and would often gaze into the distance for hours at a time, not interested in any interaction with his two boisterous terrier siblings. He would appear happy one moment and would be stomping around in rage the next. And still, not a word had escaped his mouth since birth. The only thing he seemed to be passionate about, was learning. So the father taught him everything from what he had learnt with the scientist, from the smallest of particles to the largest of galaxies.
It was two months after his birth and Cobalt's adoptive mother was fed up with his father and him, unhappy that she was caring for such a strange youngster who wasn't her own. She left them, and as she walked away, Cobalt could be heard to say his first words. What a disappointment for his father. His son talked gibberish. Nothing he said made any sense. Yet, the love he had for his son kept him caring for the youngster.
Time passed, and despite everything the father tried to do, he couldn't make his son's condition any better. He was useless at hunting; he kept wandering off, looking at the sky and muttering to himself, completely locked in his own world. Three years passed like that, the father being the sole provider of care. But his father was getting old. Just before he died, the elderly borzoi led his son to the Lexis tribe, begging for them to take care of him despite his mental state. Then, after a last goodbye, he left, never to return again.
And life continued on for Cobalt. He wasn't apt for hunting, neither was he good enough for a protector. He was ranked a citizen, and became known in the tribe for his strange mind. Things haven't changed much for him.
