A lukewarm breeze gently caressed the earth. This was a pleasant change from the still, heavy with heat air the organisms below had grown accustomed to. The moon poured rays of moonlight upon the ocean. Odd looking shadows danced around the cliff's sides, sometimes making it appear as if some unknown creature was lurking. The imagination could create lots of oddities under the cover of night. Franz stood by the seaside, gazing out into the darkness. Honey hued eyes not seeming to move as he studied each wave that rolled in, and eventually surrounded his paws before retreating back out into the ocean. Tonight was a good night for thinking, and lately Franz had too much on his plate for alone time. Tonight, however, a part of him sort of wished for the company of another. This was odd, and sort of baffled him, but he accepted it. It was okay to want the company of another. He was in a pack now, for the first time in his life. It was time he started accepting a social life.
Centuries seemed to fade by before Franz snapped out of whatever trance he had put himself in. The moon had relocated itself a few more inches to the right and it's rays had changed position, beaming down on his fur allowing the silver hairs to shine in his pelt. His limbs had become stiff for standing in the same position for an extended amount of time, and it was time to move. Pulling his reluctant, sleepy limbs out of the sandy earth, Franz began to head to more stable ground and padded quietly down the shoreline. Judging by the moon's position, most of the canines in his new 'family' were probably asleep, except maybe a few overly eager soldiers. It seemed all everyone wanted was to impress this Alpha character, Brooke. Franz respected her greatly, and already would probably follow any order she gave him, but he had lost his teenage eagerness to please a long time ago. He didn't need to prove himself, not anymore.
A bored sigh escaped Franz's mouth. Insomnia had recently taken over his mind, and he couldn't stand being bored. There was nothing to do this late at night, except sleep. And for the life of him he could not pull sleep in. His eyelids were growing heavy, but Franz knew there was no point in trying to get some sleep. It wouldn't come. It never did. Franz's tail swayed lazily behind him as he trekked on a few more paces, before snap. The washed up stick he had passed earlier snapped a few yards behind him. Immediately all signs of exhaustion eroded away and Franz was completely awake. The fur on the back of his neck bristled, as he turned to face the shadowy outline of another creature. Franz locked himself into position, muscles thick underneath his coat. His long, triangle shaped ears pricked forward towards the stranger. After only being in the pack for a day, it was still hard to identify the pack members. Therefore, he had no idea if this was a trespasser or a pack mate. After standing there for a few seconds, Franz decided to make the first move. "Salutations." His tones were surprisingly very even and strong after going so many hours without usage. The German accent from his homeland thick. It was obvious that Franz was a dominate dog, and was not in the mood for unwelcome guests.

He opened his eyes for a third time and sighed. It didn’t seem like sleep would fall over him at this point. Over the winter, where it’d been of utmost importance for him to recover from the torture, he’d shared a room with a Malamute family. Their thick, warm coats had kept him warm when sleeping and he’d been very grateful for their hospitality. But as he’d recovered, he’d moved into another room, leaving the Malamute family to give them their privacy. It’d made him feel a bit lonely to begin with, since he before then had slept beside the bodies of the two elderly dogs who’d taken care of his health as he’d recovered. Sleeping alone after finally being reunited with his pack mates had been a challenge the first week, but during the spring he’d learnt to calm down. After all, he wasn’t waking up in a cell anymore, but in his room within the Mental Aslum. His home. There was nothing to be scared of.
Now it was summer and Ryu felt happier than ever. He was a Soldier of the Bloody Paw as he’d wished to be ever since he joined the pack, and after being rescued, Ryu felt a joy and determination in life which had been unknown to him before. The only thing he could wish for more was to get to see Estelle again. His beautiful and kind friend. He hoped she’d recovered as well, just as he, and even though he couldn’t be entirely sure, the spotted Canaan dog felt relief in the fact that she had a big and loving family to take care of her. In their paws, he was sure she would do alright and that when she was ready, he would hear from her.
He rose on his four and padded silently out of his room and down the corridors. There was no reason for just lying about when he couldn’t sleep anyways. He greeted some soldiers on watch when he stepped outside and started to head down to the water at the feet of Tooth Cliff. He loved water, had been absolutely crazy about it when he’d been younger, so there was no question about where he was going. The moon was high on the sky and made it quite easy to see in the night. His dark brown eyes scanned the beach like surroundings though it was more rocky than sandy. When he’d been younger, he’d have clumsily fallen over one and each rock here, but he’d lately grown out of the silly habit of falling over things – including his own legs. When he saw another dog at the seaside, Ryu chose he might as well seek out some company and walked across the beach to meet him. But when he stepped on a stick with a paw, the other dog turned around as if on command. It was a German Shepherd male, a few years older than himself, and not someone he’d seen before. Still, however, the scent of Tempest lingered lightly upon him. Maybe he was the new one he’d heard about earlier? ”Good evening,” he replied the other male with a friendly smile, the moon’s lazy reflections on his frame giving him an even more rogue like appearance. He stepped further forward and continued in a friendly manner. ”I couldn’t sleep, and I suspect you couldn’t either?” At least the older German Shepherd in front of him didn’t look like he was on watch. Ryu had to admit that the other dog made him rather curious, seeing as if the shepherd was a newcomer, he’d like to know more about him. ”You must be the new one? I heard from some other soldiers that a new member had joined. I’m Ryu,” he introduced, realizing that it wasn’t just his tripping over stuff he’d gotten rid of. He wasn’t even stuttering the slightest, even if he spoke to a complete stranger. He actually sounded quite easygoing and decided that was a good thing. ”Welcome to the pack. How do you like it so far?” he asked with a smile, head tilted a bit to the side and shortly looked at the ocean with an almost longing gaze before looking at the newcomer again.

In a few moments time the stranger had reviled himself. Eyes traveled over the newcomer's pelt. He was only a few inches smaller than Franz, and his coat was made up of brown almost black patches on grey white fur. The opposing male released his greeting, and Franz dipped his head in response letting himself settle down. The male had the familiar scent of the Tempest pack. Even though this was Franz's first full night within the pack territory, he could already identify the scent. "I couldn't sleep, and I suspect you couldn't either?" The male had a friendly enough voice. Probably trying to sound welcoming. Franz nodded softly, looked out at the water, then returned his focus back to his packmate, "Yes, sleep is hard to come by these days." his voice was soft and comfortable. Something Franz usually wasn't. Perhaps it was the intense sense of fatigue radiating through his tired body. Who knows. Franz knew that all this dog wanted was to learn more about him, and that was fine with Franz. Tonight he didn't mind answering all these questions.
Moments later the male offered up an introduction. Franz's amber eyes made contact with the fellow soldier, who's name was Ryu. Simple, Franz liked that. Some creatures had such pointlessly long names. He tested it out in his head a few times, filing it away into a corner of his brain. He would be working with this canine for the rest of their lives. Weird to think that. Franz shook himself, trying to reawaken his senses. It would be hard to keep himself awake during the daytime hours when work had to be done. Accompanying the greeting was a welcome also. Franz nodded graciously. Pleasure to meet you, Ryu. I am indeed the new one, and so far everything is pleasant." And Franz meant every word of this. Franz flexed his shoulders, stretching them before settling himself down onto his haunches. His tired frame thanked him greatly for the rest. Amber eyes watched Ryu look at the ocean and then back at him. Franz knew how he felt. He too, shared an affection for it.
"It's beautiful isn't it, the ocean? I'm glad I picked a home near it."
ooc: sorry for the wait & such a shoddy post!

The older male nodded gently with his head as he acknowledged Ryu’s presence and looked out on the water before he spoke. The other male sounded calm, no hostility was found in his tone at all. Many here had sad and dark pasts which would turn many canines bitter, but the spotted Canaan dog couldn’t quite trace such a thing in this newcomer. He remembered how he himself had been sad when arriving to the pack’s boarders, tired from a long journey with only little prey successfully hunted and heavy at heart after his mother’s death and his father blaming him for not protecting her. He hadn’t been much more than a young adult at the time, a clumsy figure too nervous to be independent of his family. At that time he’d taken his father’s blame on him, thinking he was a failure for not having protected his sick mother from the felines, but as he’d matured, he’d seen that such a thing was foolish. Even if he’d been strong and brave at the time, he wouldn’t have been skilled enough to defend his mother against adult felines - instead he’d just had ended up dead, a thing his mother never had wished for her young. But now, as he was fully grown, Ryu was determined on being able to protect those he loved from now on.
The bigger dog looked at him, almost thoughtfully, as he introduced himself. Almost as if mentally tasting on his name before he shook his thick pelt and nodded. ”I’m glad you like it here,” he said genuinely. ”We have need of all, big as well as small, to keep the felines here at bay.” The pack could indeed use all the canines they could get in this war, and this canine looked strong. His stay could be important to the pack. Ryu shortly wondered if they one day would scatter the Iris Pride – kill the most of them and scare the others away, or if the Tempest Pack itself one day would be overrun by the enemy. No, there was no way they could let the felines win. Coming back to the present, Ryu realized that he didn’t know the other male’s name yet. ”What is your name?” he asked as he curiously tilted his head a bit to the side.
Even though Ryu was curious and wanted to ask where this other male came from and what had made him join the pack, he chose not to spill out his curiosity too heavily on the male. His own past hadn’t been too pleasant, so he knew that one’s history could be very personal, which was why he wouldn’t start asking questions about the German shepherd which could make their first encounter unpleasant. As the German shepherd by his side spoke up, an almost mischievous glint shone in his eyes as Ryu understood that the other male liked the water – perhaps almost as much as he did himself. ”Why waste your time looking at it when we could spend our time enjoying it?” he asked with a smile and looked on the shepherd one more time before he ran for the water. A little run and splashing in the cooling liquid would be just what he needed to gain the tiredness he needed for sleep. He wasn’t a puppy anymore, but why not enjoy life anyway? He reached the salty water and enjoyed the feeling of the gentle waves around his legs. When coming out where the water almost reached his knees, Ryu started bouncing along the stony beach, snapping harmlessly after jellyfish as he from time to time saw them being lit up by the moon above.
