"Speech."
A dark shadow fell across the land as it neared the edge of hyena territory, an area filled with hyenas looking for their next meal. The grass was dry and crisp to the touch, ready to go up in flames when a thunderstorm struck. Prey was scarce for the blood-thirsty scavengers and they started attacking each other to survive. Noone was safe in that dry wasteland and hyenas patrolled the grounds every night looking for unsuspecting canines and felines to wander in. Not far from the border, something moved in the long crisp grass, heading towards border. The sky seemed to sense the danger and the sun never shone for long in that wasteland. The grass moved again and if you looked carefully, you could catch small patches of a dust-covered, spotted body jumping to catch a butterfly.
The young clouded leopard’s name was Saphira, a young kit who had run-away from the iris camp. After making her way back to her old family den, her father had decided that Saphira was ready to join her older brother into the ranks of the Iris clan. Saphira, didn’t like the idea of learning to fight against others, perfering to make friends. The first chance, she had Saphira snuck out of the camp and ran as fast as she could. She rested in five minute intervals and would continue her escape, trying to put as much distance between her and the camp as possible. Of course, being a cub with no real parental authority has it’s disadvantages. Not only was she hungry, but Saphira was now lost and only following a butterfly she had found on her run. She had no idea where she is, but the butterfly kept up her hopes, giving her a chance to practice her pouncing. Another failed attempt at catching the butterfly and Saphira sat panting and scanning the area. Her ears picked up voices to the right of her, but they were too far away to pick up words.
Curiously, Saphira padded towards the voices, hoping that maybe she have found someone that could help her. A few minutes later, she stopped walking when she could hear the words the high-pitched voices were saying.
” Look for the last time the plan is simple. We’ll just go and talk to Shenzi and get her to let us go and fetch one of the new babies. We all know that food is hard to come by,” said one of the hunched back figures.
”No way. I am not going to go talk to her. Last guy that tried to talk to her about killing kids, got them killed. Can’t we just leave our territory?” whimpered a second voice.
Saphira was curious as to what this creatures were talking about and moved closer to see who or what was talking. Luck was not on her side, when a twig snapped underneath her left back paw and the voices stopped talking. Saphira didn’t know what to do, other than to keep quiet and hope that the voices would start up again. Laughter to her right and left, made her rethink that idea as two figures imerged from tall grass snarling at her.
