So I saw this on the front page of dA today.
I've held the opinion for quite a long time that breeders are fucking up dogs. I cannot understand why anyone would want a dog from the above image. Chihuahuas are no longer able to give birth naturally. German Shepherds have an array of hip problems. Pugs can barely breathe properly. Shar Pei's get terrible skin conditions.
The list goes on.
Many show-dog breeders only want to breed dogs that have over-dramatic, distinctive looks, and I just don't understand it. Why does anyone want a pug that has an overly squished nose, and a tongue so large they can't fit it out of their mouth?
Don't get me wrong, some breeders are honestly trying to help. However, Crufts and other dog shows seem to be looking for the most obscure kind of things. They're not looking at the actual health of a dog. They're looking at what physical features are the more distinctive and OTT.
Also, here is a good skull image of different breeds of dogs.
In realism, CR wouldn't have any of the breeds listed in the top image. They just wouldn't survive. There are too many health problems at play x3
Thoughts?

I must say I feel sorry about some dog breeds – for example the pug and pekingese which sometimes seem to have trouble breathing! And then there’s the hairless and overly much hairy dogs (can’t remember their names), it’s just not really natural in my eyes xD As for the basset hound, I came to think where the heck his legs were – it’s not like many of these dogs breeds look much like their wolf ancestor. So many of these “mutant dogs”, as you say, don’t even seem to be able to care for themselves (I wonder who would die first and who’d survive the longest). It’s actually a little sad to think about, but oh well, it’s not like I know much about it. It’s just a pity some dogs have to “suffer” like that just to look nice in a competition.
It could be a little interesting to see what dogs would start to look like if people didn’t mess around with breeding. Maybe they would start to look all wolflike again if all the distorted features of dog breeds disappeared?

I think most breeds of dog would be wiped out, leaving wolves and other undomestic canines. The 'survivors' of domestic dogs would probably be ones that are closest linked to the wolf, such as huskies. This is me speculating, I could be entirely wrong. I think cats, on the other hand, are far more capable to change. They have always been seen as the more independent of the two. If humans died out, cats wouldn't be as affected.
In fact, I think cats would secretly be thinking "Yes! Fucking humans. Now let's have this city to ourselves." The only problem is that cats are considerably smaller and weaker than larger dogs and wolves. They can become victims if they're not careful. However, cats are pretty clever, and I think if I was asked "Who are more likely to survive?" I'd say cats.
Although I think wolves would probably dominate. Mebbe. Idk. /speculation over

I own a husky and this is a dog who complains if she has to be outside for longer than she wants to or isn't allowed to sleep on the furniture once in a while. Idk probably all huskies aren't like that but I don't think Princess Wolf is going to survive on her own. sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/48106_574118969265231_1316563687_n.jpgobserve her inability to leave the bed

Not sure if it actually has something to do with this but, they mostly tell you breed standards for dog shows. For a while I didn't know corgis could have long fur.

A friend of mine has a Yorkshire Terrier so small that his shoulder keeps dislocating due to his poor skeletal structure, people breeding for 'Teacup Yorkies' are making them smaller and smaller every generation. At least our two are healthily sized and behave exactly like normal dogs, not pampered pooches!!
