Bear Hot, hot, hideously hot. It seemed that no matter where he went there was no respite from the unrelenting simmering heat. His thick brindle fur felt heavy and uncomfortable against his dark skin, which only attracted more of the sun's rays. All Bear wanted to do was curl up in a cool corner of the Asylum and catch up on some much needed sleep, especially since the weather made him feel ever so drowsy. Not to mention having to babysit his nieces and nephew, which was tiring at the best of times - let alone in the midsummer humidity. A gruff sigh fell from his mouth as the growing male strolled along the hot open land. Bear was developing into quite the fine soldier, with large sloping shoulders and a strong, defined muzzle. Of course, the juvenile had a while to go yet before Brooke welcomed him into the ranks of the Bloody Paw but still he was learning all the same. The death of his mother, Nikita, had made everything so much clearer for Bear and had given him a wake up call in all honesty. Life wasn't just a game, it wasn't all rainbows and sunshine: people die and sometimes there's nothing you can do about it. Except the youngster felt guilty, mostly that he was not there to help his mum when she needed him most. Guilty that he had been off somewhere playing a prank on somebody whilst Nikita was being ripped to shreds. Guilty that he had not taken more of a serious interest in what was going on in the pack, and in this way, Bear had matured.
On the other hand, the brindled dog was still just as mischievous and cocky as before. Still he remained aloof to those he deemed unworthy of his presence, still he acted like an arrogant pup at times. Maybe it was just his personality? There was a great deal Bear wanted from life: a pretty girlfriend, a fearsome reputation, power, and his whole life was now devoted to both achieving his goals and avenging Nikita's death. His father had vanished, just like his twin brother leaving only he, Antigone, Zara and Estelle left. Well that was if you didn't count the puppies! The tall canine paused as he neared a clump of heather, his jaws parting to increase his oxygen intake: damn it was hot. Of course Brooke would send out a hunting patrol in the middle of the day! "Crazy old bitch", he murmured grouchily. There was a brief feeling of paranoia that caused Bear to glance quickly over his shoulder, you never knew who could be watching and dissing your pack leader would most certainly get you into deep trouble! The worry vanished once the brindle male established he was a alone; a smug little smirk gracing his mottled face. Now he glanced about for some kind of cover - how on earth could he focus enough to hunt in this boiling heat!

Now it was time. She was gonna do it! She’d thought about it for a long time but never really dared telling anyone since she hadn’t been entirely sure of her final decision. But now she was going to do it; she’d leave the Tempest Pack. She couldn’t take it any longer. The war, the losses. The Tempest Pack was growing into a somewhat terrible place for her. She needed space, she needed to get away. It felt like only yesterday that her mother, Nikita, had died while saving her older sister Estelle, and then suddenly Tempest was being attacked by the once peaceful Lexis Tribe, sending puppies, juveniles and elders trembling inside the Asylum while they’d heard the war and death cries of their fellow packmembers outside. And still the ones participating in the battle were trying to recover from the battle against Lexis. The tribe had certainly been ambushed and outnumbered, but they’d still left their marks on the Tempest canines.
It wasn’t that she was going to sneak away during nighttime so that her whole family the next day would wake up and see that she was gone – though she seriously had started to doubt that her father would even notice… it wasn’t like he was around much these days. Ever since Nikita’s death, Antigone sadly had to admit that she’d seen far too little to her dad. It felt like the war had taken him away from her too. Family was important to the black and white mutt, which also was why there was one she was going to talk to before leaving; Bear. Rech had left Tempest long ago, making the bond between the two remaining puppies strong. She wanted Bear to leave with her, though she had no idea how her twin brother would react to her plans. Who knows, maybe we’ll find Rech out there? she thought, trying to remain joyful though she knew that chances of that were as well as non-existing. Who knew if their littermate was even alive anymore? The world outside the Tempest borders was hard, and Rech had been quite young when leaving.
But being almost two years old, Antigone was sure she could live out there – with or without Bear. She had to, because there was no way she’d stay here and see lives being thrown away any more. The war was wrong. All it did was taking loved ones away from their friends and families too early. She was barely two years old, but still the war seemed to be endless. She wasn’t able to see the bigger perspective – hell, the war had pretty much outlived Brooke, going on for pretty much their Mistress’ whole lifetime! Which was a long time considered how many battles the black lab mix had participated in… a new leader would probably be chosen soon now when Brooke had her second litter of puppies, but Anti wouldn’t stay long enough to see it happen. She’d leave, and she’d leave today. The pack and her family would do fine without her, all she needed to do now was finding Bear. She really hoped he’d go with her. It’d make everything much easier.
The young female dog knew he was out on patrol in the heat and after asking a few soldiers, she soon found his patrol trail; on his way toward Tooth Cliff. Now all she had to do was following the sound of silly pick-up lines or complaints. Most likely the pick-up lines… and thinking of that, leaving Gusto behind wasn’t easy either. After all, the coyote was the only friend outside the family she’d ever had, his sweet personality making her develop a crush on him though she stubbornly refused it. Perhaps it’s for the best that I leave him too… He’ll… probably end up with some nice girl… who isn’t on Brooke’s bad side… someone real pretty… and sweet… and then, perhaps… someday… having a family… with her… yearh, that’ll be great for him. ”Oh Anti, just leave it alone already. Your self-pity shower here won’t help on the situation,” she mumbled to herself, picking up her pace as if to outrun her bad thoughts.
She soon found him, all brindle, sweaty and complaining. That for sure was how she knew Bear in the hot midday sun. Well, with her black coat she couldn’t really brag of being much better than him either, though… But at least her fur was short and also white at some places, giving her an easier time in the heat than Bear. The bad things forgotten in an instant, the dual coloured female had to smile as she approached the twin. Quite fun to think they were in the same litter considered they didn’t look much alike. “Brave words brother - good thing no one but me heard ya,” she said with a grin. ”We can’t have Brooke knowing that her great, future soldier is complaining about his tasks.”

Bear He swung his long muzzle to the right as a blissful gust of cool wind buffeted his body, bringing with it the scent of food: rabbits. From the rich smell Bear guessed there was a whole warren further ahead, and with any luck he might be able to catch one off guard. Sighing the moody teenager prowled forward, caution replacing initial carelessness; if he was going to be sent out on a hunting patrol he may as well do his job! In a few months the young male would turn two and then Brooke would decide whether he was ready to become a fully-fledged soldier, so the last thing Bear wanted was for their Mistress to deem him an incapable fool. After stalking low to the hot ground for several minutes, the juvenile spied a couple of lone trees ahead which were surrounded by gorse and heather. No doubt the small mammals were seeking shade in and around there, and their delicious aroma was making his jaws slaver excitedly. Now that he thought about it the brindle akita cross realised just how hungry he actually was, and this only spurred on his new-found determination. Just as he began to crawl closer there was a voice, mocking and annoyingly familiar: Anti. His hackles flared instinctively with surprise and Bear whirled around to face his sister, his dark eyes clouding irritably. So she had heard him? He gulped but covered his initial concern with a stormy scowl - "Antigone, piss off! Can't you see I'm busy?" His voice was hushed but snappy, his mind still partly on his mission. The juvenile threw a hasty glance over his shoulder but already he knew the rabbits were alerted, and could hear their paws scurrying to safety in the stuffy, dead air.
Bear sighed loudly, his ears flattening as he turned back to face his twin. He observed her mischievous grin with glower, his tail curled up over his hackles. The adrenalin was leaving his body however and with the knowledge that his hunt was over, Bear began to relax. The brindled male scoffed, haughtily raising his head, "Hah. I couldn't care less if Brooke heard me .. I could take her any day" Now it was his turn to grin, and with youth coursing his veins Bear forgot his anger. The situation turned quickly into a game for the brother, as he lowered his front-end and eyed up his black and white sibling. "Just like I can take you right now!" Suddenly the youngster pounced, strong jaws snapping, large paws outstretched and aiming to push Antigone right over. He playfully bit and pawed in his sister's direction before leaping away and out of reach with any luck. Bear's tongue lolled out his mouth and he panted loudly from the midday heat but he didn't mind so much anymore. Now this he could do all day every day, for he loved his twin sister's company more than anything. After Nikita was murdered the pair had become closer than ever, and to be honest, the shepherd mix couldn't imagine a life without her sarcastic remarks and bad temper. They were so very similar and it was this that made them fit like two pieces in a puzzle. Except, one day everything would change. One day they would be complete opposites. Bear just wasn't aware that this day, however, was closer than he could possibly believe.

The brindle akita mix turned as her voice rang in his ears, but he didn’t look happy. Actually he looked annoyed at her comment, but she wasn’t going to take his gaze or words personally – they were siblings after all. What was their relationship without a little teasing? The male’s voice had been low and he’d stalked as if on hunting, but Antigone wasn’t going to boost his already huge ego by offering him an easy prize. ”Busy? With what?! Eating dust?” she laughed. Bear, now giving up his hunt, padded closer toward her and though his body seemed to be more relaxed, the two coloured dog knew he wanted revenge on her in some way. They just knew each other too well.
But maybe she was lucky just now? Could be he wanted to wait with his revenge for later. At least it seemed like he was more occupied with insulting Brooke for fun. Had she been a good soldier, she probably wouldn’t encourage him in doing such a thing, but heck – they were young, a little fun couldn’t hurt! The grin on her brother’s lips made her smile. ”I would like to see you say that to her fa-” Antigone didn’t get to say more than that though, because suddenly the brindle dog was attacking her playfully, determined as ever to get his sweet revenge. His strong jaws aimed and caught her ear – it was nothing that hurt, but his assault was still enough to catch her off guard to he easily could roll her over with his stronger body, resulting in Antigone being bathed in dust.
”Bear! Not now you big, stupid puppy,” she exclaimed in tease, but her eyes were more distant than usual. Bear wasn’t expecting that anything was about to happen, this was just one more normal day to her brother. How could she also expect anything else from him? It wasn’t like she’d told anyone about her plans on leaving the pack. And Bear’s playful behaviour wasn’t helping on the increasing feeling of nervousness in her body. She felt almost guilty, as if she was about to tell him that she’d committed a crime. How would he react?
The bigger dog had now recoiled, panting hard in the sun. The dual toned female rolled over to get onto her four, her fur all grey with dust now. She coughed a few times to clear her throat and shook her pelt to get the dust off – at least attempting at getting her normal colours back. She looked back at Bear whose pink tongue lolled out of his mouth in a playful grin and she gulped hard while trying to gain courage. This was something entirely different than fighting off bullies or cats who tried to threaten your niece. But it wasn’t a crime, was it? Leaving the pack… it wasn’t like she was a traitor, was she? She just thought the war was going too far, without end, without point. She just… couldn’t stay.
”Bear, I… I’ve come to say something,” she said in a now serious tone, hesitating with her words, not really knowing what or how to say this. Was there even a right way to put it? She sat down and pawed nervously a single time at the ground with her forepaw before looking at Bear again. She laid her tail close to her body as if it’d make everything easier. Looking at her brother, sitting there as if everything was completely normal… it was just so hard. Would he even come with her? Her dark eyes flickered for a moment. No Anti, stay focused. That’s the least you can do, she thought as she found Bear’s eyes. The words were about to get caught in her throat again, it was better to spit them out already before she completely lost them. ”I’m leaving the pack Bear.” There, now she’d said it. It was no secret anymore.

Bear
Even as they tousled and rolled in the thick summer dust, as if everything was normal, Bear began to sense a wrongness in his sister. Why wasn't she properly fighting back, why was she just kicking him off and then came her snapping voice. Not now, why not? There was a frown on her forehead and a faraway look in her chocolate eyes, it made the brindle dog close his panting jaws and reel back his strong neck in mild confusion. When did Antigone ever turn down a bit of rough and tumble, a chance to sink her teeth playfully into the brother who teased her about Gusto constantly? His spine tingled with an distinct uncertainty ... something was not right. The two toned female shifted her paws and Bear tilted his brown head, he could not help the way his tail drooped with lackluster. The mood had completely changed and the teasing edge was replaced with a piercing tension. What was it? Had she done something bad? Was Brooke mad with her? Were Zara's pups okay? Bear's dark eyes widened with fear. He could just see she was desperate to tell him what was on her mind and the youngster was starting to freak out. "Come on then, spit it out!" Then she sat down, and now he was really worried. Anti rarely looked this serious except from when she was in a foul temper or about to start a training assessment, she was in neither. Suddenly her jaws parted and the words blurted out rapidly. Bear froze.
For a few moments the taller dog simply stared blankly at Antigone, blinking confusedly. When it started to register what she had said however, the brindled akita mix broke into a wide grin and started to laugh loudly, as if trying to brush what she had said off. Bear knew she was joking now, right? She had to be .. Anti was the most dedicated Tempest juvenile in the whole pack, even if she had been a little distant lately but that was to be expected. Their mother had died and they all needed their own space but no way could she be serious about this. Was it April Fools day? "Good one, Anti! You almost got me there." He pounced forward again and knocked her shoulder, before turning and standing opposite his smaller sister once more. His tail wagged profusely, but still he couldn't shake the uneasy sensation that traveled throughout his entire body as Bear realised the dual-toned girl wasn't laughing either. Still he persevered. "Haha, could you imagine what Dad would say or Brooke for that matter? Oh Anti, your pranks are unrivaled, except for mine of course. I will get you back for this." Bear chuckled again, shaking his head in great amusement. She had to be joking. She just had to be.

She had said it. She felt unease in her body, but her trembling wasn’t to be seen. She waited for her brother’s response, but there was none. In the beginning he just sat there, as if her words echoed over and over in his mind. What was he thinking? How many thoughts were crossing his mind right now? Which emotions? From his outer, she could read nothing – strange, considered he was her brother. Uncomfortable. This is killing me, she thought, throat dry from words. Then the tense air cracked as Bear started to laugh loudly, almost uncontrollably. What was happening, why was he laughing? Though, despite his laughter, the tension didn’t quite seem to fully disappear. It wasn’t like the dust which she quite easily had brushed off just a few seconds ago.
Then, with his words, Antigone finally realized what was happening, what Bear was thinking. He thought she was joking. She hadn’t thought it possible, but suddenly her heart clenched even tighter together, as if someone squeezed it, wanting to hurt her. No, no. Please. This isn’t happening. Please say this isn’t happening! What should she do? What could she do? Right now it was so temptingly easy to just play along, laugh out loud and pretend everything was nothing but a joke, make her beloved brother, her partner in crime, feel happy and safe in his normal world again… but it would be so wrong, so terribly wrong. She would be lying to him, to herself. She would end up hating herself for making such a choice, hell she could see herself sneaking out in the dark of the night to escape from the place she already once had chosen to leave if she right now chose to play along. She couldn’t do it. She couldn’t lie. And therefore no laughter, not even a single smile, was found on her lips as Bear continued to urge her.
”Dad and Brooke will know soon enough. Though… I don’t know where Dad is…” she said, feeling empty inside. Things seemed to be crumbling together. Everything was not as it should be. She’d thought everything would be good as soon as Estelle would return. Somehow it also had, but something was still missing. She needed space, she needed to get away from the terrible happenings in this war that seemed to carry no end. ”And I’m not joking Bear, I’m serious.” She stood up, now seeming more confident than she felt. ”I’m leaving the pack. I don’t want to be a part of this war anymore. It has no end. The only thing we accomplice with it is losing our family and friends. The war takes too much away from us too soon.” She shook her head, feeling sad inside but surer in her decision. ”I’m leaving, today. I’ve come to ask if you’d go with me. We could go out there and make our own fortune, start something of our own instead of fighting a war older than ourselves,” she looked at Bear with hopeful eyes though she knew her chances might be small. ”I’m tired of these losses, Bear. The Iris Pride caught and tortured our sister and they killed our mother. And look at Dad. Look at what all this war has done to him. Haven’t we lost him too? All the war has brought us was sadness. There’s no glory in this endless fighting.” She finished with a deep breath. Would Bear understand? Would he come with her? Would he be mad at her? If the latter, she hoped he’d also forgive her one day.

Bear She's not joking, is she? A sharp, bone-shattering fear ricocheted through the young dog's body. How could ever have prepared himself for this? He knew without a shadow of doubt that his twin was being deadly serious, he could see it in her eyes, in her body language, in her voice. He became very still, very quiet, and a deep frown appeared on his forehead. He listened to Antigone's familiar voice as she mentioned their father, at this he broke their eye contact, glancing down at the ground in sadness. It was true; nobody had seen Hueso for weeks now and it was breaking his son's heart. Every day without his parents was like swimming in an ocean cluttered with debris, no - drowning. The harder he tried to fight his way through the mess the more exhausted he became. Every day Bear put on a brave face and pretended that life couldn't get any better, but what he would have done without the rest of his family and the pack he didn't know. They would always be there for him, Tempest would never die nor vanish into thin air and he was utterly reliant on them. Not that he would let on to them, of course; that would be weak of him.
He just couldn't get his head round it - what had changed? The brindle shepherd-mix began to grow restless, and he started to pace before Anti as she explained herself. His ears lay flat against his long head and his eyes bore hotly into the ground. A deep, dark rage stirred from deep within and it lashed out at his heart, tearing and snarling. She didn't want to be a part of the war ... lost family, lost friends ... leaving today ... come with ... killed mother ... no glory. All these words bombarded and assaulted his thoughts and the juvenile stopped very suddenly, closing his eyes tight. This was just a horrible nightmare and all he had to do was wake up, right? After counting to three internally Bear opened his eyes wide again, only to find himself staring at the two-toned female's paws once more. He found himself out of breath and struggling to draw in the sufficient amount of oxygen, and it was all getting too much. How could he deal with losing another family member? Both mum and dad were gone now, Estelle was not the same and god knows how long before something happened to Zara, Koen or the pups! But go with her? Never. Pent up anger, frustration and fear burst from his jaws in an explosive display of desperation.
"How can you do this to us, to me? What are you thinking, Antigone? Have you lost your mind!" He snarled, bringing his head up fully now and staring at furiously in the eye, his rage building. "How dare you! Our mother died for a reason, she gave up her life so that we could go on living and you're throwing that all away." He hissed and barked, furred hackles flaring aggressively. Never before had he felt so disturbed, so violently angry at his kin. "We fight because the feline scum will kill us all if we do not. We make sacrifices because we have to forge a path for the future generation. And you think that I could leave with you? I am many things Antigone, but I am no traitor." Bear stopped, shaking his muzzle. His deep eyes grew softer now, as if pleading with her. He was so confused, so wound up with blistering anxiety that it was making his whole body ache and his head spin. What would he do without his sister? His beautiful sister that had lain beside him as a babe, who had played beside him as a puppy, who had trained beside him as a youth and had fought beside him as a warrior. She was all he had ever known, and the only friend he'd ever had.

Bear stopped his pacing back and forth when she ended her explanation. For a moment he stood there, thinking, ears drawn back on his skull. She felt her heart pounding in her chest as she waited for his reaction, and though Bear opened his eyes after just a few seconds, it felt like a very long time where she just stood there, waiting. Then he burst, his words lashing at her like a whip as he spilled all of his frustration out on her. She recoiled slightly at his angry tone. It was nothing she’d experienced from him before even though they’d had plenty of fights. They were siblings after all… but this was different, much different. If she went, would she ever see her brother again? Was her parting going to be permanent or would she come back? Would he even let her come back again if she wanted to? She didn’t know. He was so mad at her right now, his furious eyes making her fear that she would never be forgiven by him.
But his words also made her angry. How could dare he treat her like this?! Had he been any other canine, she’d have been at his throat already, wanting to make him take back his words right away. How could he be so wrong? His words, his behaviour. Anger flaring inside her, Antigone spoke up before thinking twice of her words. ”Me, throwing it all away? No!” she exclaimed, voice edged with determination. ”Look at yourself Bear, it’s you who’s throwing it away. You’re the one who wants to stay here and die. There’s more out there than just fighting, killing and sacrificing. Why not try and experience that instead of just this eternal bloodbath? Or are you afraid of leaving the little bubble you already know, going out in the open and experience something new?” She huffed, wondering if she’d crossed the line. Does it even matter? Certainly he’s already crossed it, she thought angrily, clenching her teeth at the fact her own brother had called her a traitor. ”And don’t you dare calling me a traitor again you bastard!” she barked harshly, regretting her harsh voice as soon as it emerged from her throat. But she wouldn’t take her words back again. It was his own fault, he could just stop being so immature and thereby stop treating her this way.
She drew a sharp breath, again saddened by the thought of their mother’s death. It was a stupid thing to fight over… They should be standing together, supporting each other… not fighting like this. The young female knew that Nikita would have been very disappointed in them if she saw them like this. Had she seen them like this, fighting as small puppies, she’d have knocked them both over and barked that they should better shut up. After looking at her paws shortly, she looked at Bear again. Her dark eyes were still determined, but far less angry than before. More… sad actually, just like she felt. Strong, but sad. How could he say that all felines just wanted to tear your throat out? “Stop being so narrow-minded Bear… Remember what creature brought back our mother,” she said silently. It wasn’t a secret that a lion had carried their mother’s dead body home, and however confused Antigone had been by this gesture, she knew it was true. A lion’s scent had lingered on her mother’s lifeless body, but it hadn’t carried the foul scent of Iris. There was more, more to the world than just fighting. She wanted to experience that too. She wanted to learn the real world to know. By going, she would perhaps be able to see the world in a different view where the blinkers she’d been forced to wear by the Tempest Pack could be removed.

Bear knew he was hurting her with his sharp, angry words but he no longer cared. Second by second, minute by minute the sense of betrayal grew inside his stomach until it was all he could do to hold himself back from barreling his sister to the parched ground. Maybe it would be best if he did, perhaps he could knock some sense into his dual-toned sibling! This was utter madness and yet the brindle youth understood just how serious Antigone was, and a part of him had already resigned itself to to her departure. Was there really anything he could do now? Then it was her turn to lash back at her brother and Bear flattened his long, straight ears against his skull whilst baring his teeth marginally. She thought she knew everything then? Where had she got these preposterous ideas from in the first place, that was a question he was intrigued by to start with! Their whole lives had been sheltered by Tempest and the pack's values has of course been thrummed into their mindset's from a very early age. Bear recalled days spent trailing after their parents who were hunting for the pack or patrolling a border, and still he could picture Anti's avid, determined gaze. She had been full of admiration for both Hueso and Nikita so what had changed now?
He barked at the black-and-white female as she finished, curling his tail higher over his back in aggression. "So what if there is more out there? Who cares about finding inner peace or whatever else you're bloody looking for? I don't care about the world, I don't give a damn about living an easy, loner lifestyle because I will never abandon my pack and that is what you are doing, dear sister. We were born for this Antigone, don't you see? Iris have to be stopped, killed, banished, because it will never end otherwise. Dogs will always die at their claws and teeth even though we are the superior race, it cannot go on! What, do you think that if Tempest dispersed and ran off to play at being nice the pride would welcome us with open arms? They would murder everyone and force us all to eat our own children. You're right, I am going to be the one to stay here and I may well be killed but I will die protecting my family, Ismere, Harper, Natasha and I'll be safe in the knowledge that I did everything I possibly could to keep those I love safe." There was silence again but the tension had waned, leaving Bear feeling drained and weakened. Only the drooping of his tail gave away his sudden sadness and his ears flicked at Anti's low tones. True, a lion had brought back Nikita to Tempest and there was no disputing that but the akita-mix was not going to lay down his paws and kiss Iris' tails for the actions of one feline. "But can you forget so easily the same creatures that ripped her apart?" He sighed, they were getting nowhere.
Never did Bear think that he would having a conversation such as this with his closest friend, and the hurt was festering inside. He wanted to get away from her and yet hold her close at the same time, but he knew that their relationship would never be the same again. A snarl ripped from his jaws. "Go on then. Leave. See if I care, see if anyone even notices your disappearance." The brindle male felt sickened to the core by simply looking at his twin for she had committed a terrible crime against the pack today, the extended family that Hueso had been general of and their mother had birthed them into. The larger dog turned now, hackles flaring once more. "If I catch you on my pack's territory after today I will not hesitate to drag you to Brooke by your ears. Traitor."
