So I was walking my dog, Shasta, this afternoon, and this German Shepherd I know (I used to pet him through his fence when I walked past during the last summer holidays, when he was an adorable puppy) jumped his fence and his neighbours, and started following me and Shasta. I stopped and stared at him, and he stopped too, but he wouldn't stop staring at Shasta.
I was afraid he was going to attack Shasta, and when he ran at us, I grabbed him by the collar. I had Shasta's lead connected to my waist, and I was basically trying to hold them back from one another; Shasta's a Standard Schnauzer, and much smaller than any German Shepherd - I was terrified that this other dog would get hold of him and seriously injure/kill him.(He was attacked by a runaway pit bull a few years ago -and was quite seriously injured, so I was having the horrors about this German Shepherd ripping him apart).
Anyway, I was standing there for about ten minutes, getting more anxious all the time. You know how they say dogs get the vibe of your emotions and respond to it? Well, I thik Ziggy (the German Shepherd) sensed my fear and started growling and barking at Shasta, pulling on his collar and almost getting at him several times. I ended up yelling at Ziggy; I think I must have sounded like a typical hysterical female, going, "Ziggy, leave him alone!"
I was almost in tears at this point, and I think I didn't call for help because I was afraid I'd totally lose it and Ziggy would get at Shasta. Finally this guy who lived next door crossed the road. And he was smiling, I think, and just said calmly, "Is that the dog who lives next door?"
I was just so on edge, ready to cry and angry, so all I could manage was "Yup." And Ziggy's owner walked up the driveway, came over the fence, and called his dog, only saying "Thank you" to me, nothing more. I held onto that German Shepherd until I was certain he'd go to his master; I didn't really trust him.
And then we pretty much walked away and I started crying, and was pretty shaken for the next hour or so, too. I'm just slightly annoyed that the guy didn't apologise - maybe he didn't realise that his dog could've easily killed mine if he'd managed to get to him in the time I was alone with the two of them.
